Skilled motor vehicle experts are always in high demand and taking one of our motor vehicle courses could be your first step into this industry.

Learning in our £4.3 million STEM Centre with industry- standard equipment and high-spec diagnostic tools, you will learn about the maintenance of motor vehicles and the various roles that are available in the industry.

This course is mainly theory-based, although 40% of your time will be spent working on cars. You will gain the skills you need to progress to further study, then Higher Education or employment.

Engaging with employers is also an integral part of this programme – we’ll seek to ensure that you have opportunities to gain real-world experience of your chosen sector.

Topics on your Study Programme will include:

• Working Safely & Effectively
• Foundation Skills
• Vehicle Construction & Routine Maintenance of Transmissions Systems
• Operating Principles of Tyres, Brakes, Steering & Suspension Systems
• Operating Principles of Engines
• Operating Principles & Maintenance of Transmission Systems
• Operating Principles of Electrical & Electronic Systems

Elements of study

Your programme consists of the following elements:
• Study of your chosen vocational subject - 50% of your programme
• Employability skills, such as punctuality, attendance, communication and team work
• Work experience or an Industry Placement, giving you a taste of working life
• Tutorial and personal development, such as healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills

• A minimum of 4 GCSEs, graded 9-4, including English or Maths

You will be assessed through practical assessments, formal assignments, online testing and completion of a portfolio.

Following further study you could work as a: 

• Motor vehicle breakdown engineer, earning up to £40,000 per year
• Vehicle Body Repairer, earning up to £30,000 per year
• Mechanic, earning up to £35,000 per year

You'll have your own Learning Development Mentor (LDM) and Work Placement Officer, helping you create both academic and career plans.

Exposure to employers is also an integral part of this programme – we'll seek to ensure that you have opportunities to gain real-word experience of your sector, either on short work experience or an extended Industry placement.
